Helen and her husband Derrick Koon are both Chinese who were born in Hong Kong but immigrated to Canada as young professionals. Helen is an occupational therapist.

Their son Elliott was born in 1998 before they moved to Foster City ( 30 min south of San Francisco, California, USA).
